There is now compelling evidence to support the revolutionary concept of non genetic, foetal and neonatal programming of many chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease and cancer, which often only manifest decades later in adult life. Many of these disease development phenomena are now strongly linked to sub-optimal environmental and nutritional conditions in the womb, and as such can be modified with the potential for altered disease outcomes. In this lecture the evidence for the concept of foetal disease programming, its causes and also its effect on subsequent risk of developing diseases will be thoroughly explored. |
